STONEHAM, MA–The results are in after a pitiful turnout, especially for such a nice day — 2,359 out of approximately 14,000 registered Stoneham voters cast ballots on April 3, Election Day 2002.
CONTESTED RACES
Selectmen: Charles Smith defeated incumbent Darin Leahy, 1,213 to 1,101.
Planning Board: Incumbent Gus Niewehous defeated Chuck DeCoste, 1,155 to 1,078.
Housing Authority: Edward Pinato defeated Elizabeth Parise, 1,359 to 666.
UNOPPOSED RACES
School Committee (two seats): Cheryl Walsh topped the ticket with 1,630 votes, and David Sheils got 1,389.
Library Trustees (two spots): Patricia Kilty topped the ticket with 1,660 votes, and Rocco Ciccarello got 1,504.
Board of Health: Mike Rolli got 1,762 votes, the most of any candidate.
Board of Assessors: William Jordan got 1,696 votes.
Ballot question: Can Select-men grant theaters of 300 or more seats liquor licenses?
Citizens gave Selectmen the right to grant such theaters liquor licenses by a vote of 1,403 to 725.
