STONEHAM, MA - Workers were evacuated and the State Police bomb squad called in after ,a robber allegedly held up the Tremont Credit Union at 91 Montvale Ave. in Stoneham just over the Woburn line and then tossed a device contained what he said was a bomb made of dynamite on the floor, around 11 a.m., today.
Police from Woburn and Stoneham closed off Montvale Avenue in both directions (at Maple Street on the Woburn side) for about 45 minutes, but reopened it around noon although the bomb squad had still not emerged from rear of the building
The three-story commercial building contained 10 other businesses in addition to the credit union. The credit union is apparently located toward the back of the building, away from Montvale Avenue.
Stoneham firefighters and multiple ambulances were standing by as the bomb squad prepared to enter the building
Police told reporters a single female employee was in the credit union at the time of the robbery. She was reportedly very distraught and had left the scene.
The suspect was described as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches, 150 pounds, unshaven, wearing sunglasses and a white baseball cap and carrying a green bag.
