STONEHAM, MA - Five lives were irrevocably and tragically altered last weekend as a Belmont jazz musician was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on a rain-slicked Interstate 93 in Stoneham on Saturday night. David Azarian, 51, was replacing a driver-side tire on his vehicle in the breakdown lane when an SUV slammed into him as his wife and two young daughters watched in horror, according to State Police.

The nightmarish chain of events took place shortly before 10 p.m. in the Interstate 93 south-bound lane was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.

According to State Police reports, Angela Ansara, 34, of Swampscott, reportedly was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her 2002 Lexus Sports Utility and crashed into Azarian's mini-van.

State Police sources said that Ansara may face charges of motor vehicle homicide, speeding, failure to remain within marked lanes, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle stemming from the accident.

Heavy rain had cut visibility and created a dangerous atmosphere, according to State Police. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Azarian, a native of Armenia who emigrated to the United States in 1989, was a locally renowned jazz pianist who had performed nationally and regularly at several local jazz clubs in the Cambridge-area during his 13 year life in the United States.

Azarian is survived by his wife Vicki, his children Dennis, Christina and Nicole, as well as sister Parandzaen, mother Mikelian, and father Vruir, all of Armenia.
