Five Crystal Apple Awards were bestowed on deserving individuals at the School Committee's June 16 meeting, carrying on the committee's tradition of recognizing those who epitomize dedication and hard work on behalf of youth in Stoneham.

School Committee Chairman Marie Christie presented each award, beginning with retiring Central School Principal Kathleen Windisch.

Since 1993, Windisch has been a staunch advocate for what is best for students, first as Middle School Assistant Principal and, since 1997, as principal of Central Elementary School, Christie said.

"Kathy's humor and poise have served her in good stead as she shepherded her charges through Education Reform, MCAS, and a school building program. She is a school leader who has worked with staff and peers to create a community of learners in Stoneham."

Christie added that Windisch is remarkable for knowing each and every student by name, and each staff member both personally and professionally.

"She will be missed by many and wished well by all."

"It truly has been an honor and a privilege to serve you as your principal," Windisch remarked. "But it has been an absolute joy to spend my days with your children."

The second recipient was Windisch's one time mentor, retiring Middle School principal Jim Andreottola.

Andreottola began his career in Stoneham in 1971 as a Middle School Social Studies teacher known for his exuberant teaching style. Promoted to Program Supervisor of Social Studies, Andreottola brought structure to the department and mentored new teachers. As Middle School Principal for the past 12 years, he advocated tirelessly for implementation of a student-centered Middle School philosophy.

"His expertise in interacting and dealing with young adolescents has been influential in creating a positive and enriching school environment," Christie said.

Among Andreottola's attributes that have made him a popular fixture on the Middle School scene is his over-the-top sense of humor, genuine humility, long-lasting relationships with former students and parents, and his "loyalty, dedication and commitment to the children of Stoneham Public Schools," praised Christie.

In accepting his award, Andreottola credited his community of parents and his staff for their undying support at all times, including Windisch, his former assistant principal, and current Middles School Assistant Principal Christine McMenimen, saying, "these two ladies have been absolute superlatives."

"Middle School kids are special," he said, illustrating the attitude that has helped him do a consistently good job over the years.

The next Crystal Apple was awarded to a Stoneham High graduate who became an invaluable member of the school system, Jim Carino.

Since 1983, Carino has worked for the system in a variety of roles, including teaching assistant, A-V technician, and computer Media Specialist.

"Jim, however, is much more than what's in his job description," Christie said. "Jim is a good samaritan."

Whatever needs to be done, Jim avails himself to help, whether it is setting up Town Hall for a Town Meeting or setting up an overhead projector for budget discussions.

"Regardless of the request, Jim is always there to facilitate and accommodate. Most notably, he does it with humor and good will," Christie said.

"He is the unofficial good will ambassador for the Stoneham Public Schools."

The final two Crystal Apple awards went two members of the Stoneham Business and Community Educational Foundation, an organization that has enhanced the educational experience for students in Stoneham?s public and private schools and other organizations since 1994.

Stoneham resident Bev Mattatal volunteered to participate on a steering committee in 1992 looking into formulating and educational foundation.

Thirteen years later, she continues to tirelessly serve on the executive board of the organization that has awarded over $60,000 in grants for innovative programs for the town's public elementary schools, St. Patrick School, Stoneham High School, Stoneham Library, and Stoneham Theater to name just a few recipients. SBCEF programs include The Annual Adult Spelling Bee, Antiques Appraisal Day, and Holiday Door Contest, and its motto has been "It takes an entire village to help a child."

"Bev assists at every event, at all levels. She is the foundation's historian."

Stoneham resident Steve Quattrocchi joined the SBCEF in 1993 and, according to Christie, has become the organization's go-to person.

Having served in a number of capacities for the foundation, Quattrocchi is said to be always willing to accept any responsibility to ensure a successful event.

"Steve goes the extra mile with his time and effort. Thank you for being a leader in the village."

"I feel honored to be in such a class," Quattrocchi said. "I'm overwhelmed by the honor."
