Attempted murder on Fallon Road
Published on July 27th, 2005
A series of events that began with the merciless beating of woman with a rock in the woods adjacent to Fallon Road on the Stoneham/Woburn line led to the arrest of a Dorchester man last week.
Joe Simpson, 33, of 380 Talbot Ave., Dorchester, is being charged with attempted murder after he reportedly ran out of gas in the Fallon Road area, brought his female companion into the woods in the early hours of Friday morning, and allegedly savagely beat her with a rock before stealing a rental truck and fleeing the area.
"It was a pretty gruesome scene - so much so that we couldn't tell at first if the victim was a man or a woman," said Stoneham Police Det. Bob McKinnon. "Both of her eyes were swollen shut and she had cuts and dried blood all over her body. He really did a number on her."
"I think this was the first time a lot of the people who reported to the scene had seen anything so vicious," added McKinnon.
Simpson reportedly left the area and was pulled over hours later in Hyde Park and arrested by Boston Police for an unrelated outstanding warrant. Police officials later learned that the Ryder truck he was operating was stolen and then later learned about his reported connection to the victim.
According to police sources, the suspect had evidence of blood on his clothes when he was pulled over in Hyde Park.
The woman, a New Hampshire native, was transported to Mass General Hospital and treated for her considerable injuries, but was expected to recover.
Fallon Road security personnel were alerted to the situation when the woman crawled from the woods to a nearby car, snuck inside and began to lean on the horn for help. Security guards contacted the Stoneham Police, who responded to a report of a "badly beaten woman" on Fallon Road at roughly 4:30 a.m.
Further investigation of the Fallon Road scene by a K-9 Unit revealed the rock and a pile of bloody clothes in the woods used in the barbaric beating. Stoneham Police issued a warrant for Simpson's arrest on charges of attempted murder, and an arraignment at Woburn District Court is expected in the near future.
