Nearly a dozen bicycles have been stolen over the last several weeks, and Stoneham Police are on the look-out for potential thieves.

The thefts have ranged from bikes being stolen from residents' private property and garages to bicycles being pilfered from the center of town and local schools.

"We wanted to just send this out as a friendly reminder to kids and parents to lock up their bikes and to make sure they're secured," said Stoneham Police Lt. Rick McCarthy. "At this point, we don't know if it's just kids looking for transportation from Point A to Point B, or if there's someone with a pick-up just going around town and picking up bikes - we kind of just wanted to give everyone a heads up that this is going on."

The rising cost of expense of replacing these stolen items is making their larceny a bit more of a serious situation than in the past.

"You feel badly for the kids and the families because these bikes are getting pretty expensive," added McCarthy.
