STONEHAM, MA - While the Town of Stoneham is still holding steady with a pair of Level Three Sex Offenders living within the town lines of Stoneham, there are a group of sex offenders living and working around Stoneham - information that concerned parents and residents can obtain through the Internet.
"We wanted to make sure this information got out there' it's really in the best interest for the community to know the location of anyone deemed a Level Three Offender by the Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB)," said Stoneham Police Lt. Rick McCarthy of the site located at www.nsopr.gov. "This web site is something that people interested in the information can obtain any place at any time."
In June 2005, the Office of Justice Programs announced the activation of a National Offender Public (NSOPR) Registry Web site which provides "real time access to public sex offender data nationwide with a single Internet search. The Department-sponsored Web site allows parents and concerned citizens to search existing public, state and territory sex offender registries beyond their own state" according to a press release.
With a single query from any Web-capable computer, NSOPR searches public, state and territory sex offender registries to deliver matched results based on name, state, county, city/town or zip code. There are over 500,000 registered sex offenders nation-wide and statistics have show the rate of repeat offenses with these individuals is high.
"Citizens will now be able to search the latest information for the identity and location of known sex offenders across state boundaries," said Regina B. Schofield, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs. "The coordination between each state and the Department of Justice to accomplish such a rigorous goal is phenomenal. This is an extraordinary example of the Department of Justice working in partnership with states to enable parents and concerned citizens to better protect America's communities from sex offenders."
