STONEHAM, MA - The School Committee went face-to-face with the two finalists vying for the Assistant Superintendency in Stoneham last Thursday night.

Both candidates came highly regarded by members of Stoneham's search committee as well by their references.

“We've gotten very positive references. I'm confident we have very accurate and very thorough input,” School Superintendent Dr. Joseph Connelly told the committee before introducing the candidates.

“I'm really pleased to bring before you tonight two finalists I feel have very strong credentials.”

Billerica Memorial High School Principal Dr. Richard Safier and Georgetown School System Director of Curriculum and Instruction Anne H. Patriquin sustained a third round of interviews last week, with each displaying a breadth of knowledge of curriculum development and government mandated programs, as well as a high degree of competence in technology, budget management, and organizational, verbal, and writing skills.

But in the end, it was Patriquin, who got the nod from both Casey and the School Committee for her greater involvement in K-12 curriculum, grant writing, and classroom experience.

“I wish we could hire them both,” Connelly said before recommending that the School Committee appoint Patriquin. The committee, liking what they heard from both candidates and from Patriquin in particular, voted 4-0 in favor of the appointment.

Patriquin taught at Wakefield High School for 25 years before moving her career to Georgetown.

“I think Stoneham is a good fit. I've spent most of my career in Wakefield. I see them as similar communities. I feel professionally it's a good fit for me,” she told the committee.

“I think I'm also ready to become an assistant superintendent of schools because it's the job I do. If Georgetown was bigger, that would be my title.”

Patriquin also displayed sensitivity in the realm of professional development, particularly how it can sometimes affects veteran teachers, and keeping those programs meaningful.

“You need to know about adult learners,” she said of her approach to that area of responsibility that she will take on as well in Stoneham.

She also spoke with pride with regard to her visibility within the schools.

“I schedule a half day every week that is sacred. By being in the building, I get involved in the classrooms,” she said, adding that she considers it crucial to be visible at parent meetings and student activities.

“I think it's real important that you are there for the kids. That's the business we're in...and the kids appreciate very much. It's a way that you let them know you're there for them.”

When asked by School Committee Chairman Kristin Russo about future career aspirations, Patriquin said that her goal is to become an assistant superintendent of schools.

“I see this as my strength working in concert with a superintendent.”
