STONEHAM, MA - A pair of men brazenly busted into the Clearview Road home of a 68-year-old man and reportedly beat the victim to a bloody pulp while demanding money, just hundreds of feet from the home of a Stoneham Police Officer last Wednesday morning.

Bernard McCabe, 29, of 3 Second Street, Westford, was arrested and charged with armed robbery while masked, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a victim over the age of 65, receiving stolen property over $250 and carrying a firearm without a license after Stoneham Police reported to the Clearview Road home at 1:16 a.m.

According to police reports, a friend of the victim, identified as William McDonough of Stoneham, ran to the neighboring Clearview Road home of Stoneham Police Officer Joe Ponzo when the robbery and assault took place in the wee hours of early Wednesday morning.

Ponzo and the reporting Stoneham Police nabbed McCabe while a second suspect, who also donned a mask and was armed with a gun, was able to get away after Ponzo arrived at McDonough's home.

McCabe was arrested near the scene of the crime after reportedly assaulting McDonough and demanding money from the victim, while also brandishing handguns.

McCabe was arraigned at Woburn District Court last week, and the Stoneham Police are still searching for the second assailant in the crime.

Officers Kennedy, Ryan, Dalis, Cullen, McKinnon and Ponzo were all at the scene of the home invasion, and the State Police K-9 unit reported to the scene to attempt to sniff out the second suspect - to no avail.
