Traffic box to return to the Square?
Published on September 27th, 2006
STONEHAM, MA - Stoneham High School Class of 1982 graduate and spokesperson for the Class of 1982 Beautification Fun Chris Oneschuk visited the Selectmen, and informed them of the do-gooding group's plan for 2006 - the fourth project for a highly energetic and effective alumni group that has done great work to enhance many of the landmarks and school grounds around the Town of Stoneham.
"We did the facelift on the Middle School last year, a huge project for us, and in 2004 we did the permanent holiday tree at the Town Common, and in 2003 we planted 12 crab apple trees at the high schools...projects that we were so proud to take part in," said Oneschuk. "We come here tonight to talk about this year's project, which would be beautifying the Stoneham Square in two different ways.
"First, we'd like to purchase 30 whiskey barrels and install them from Montvale Ave. to the Stoneham Public Library [on both sides of Main Street] and then maintain them, supply plants for them, and taking full responsibility for them...and secondly we'd love to resurrect the police traffic box and put it back in the Stoneham Square," added Oneschuk, of the Class of 1982 Beautification Fund's goals for the year. "We raised $13,000 last season, and it was just amazing to me the outpouring of support from all kinds of people."
According to Oneschuk, the Alliance House has agreed to water the barrels every day in accordance with their required community service and the Stoneham Garden Club also agreed to help maintain the barrels - which Oneschuk hoped to plant in the spring with the same flowering plants. She estimated the barrel cost at $50 a barrel and $50 for the flowers, and then hoped to raise enough money to maintain the barrels for five years going forward.
"We've seen the box in the square from the time we were kids and it's important to us to get the traffic box back out there," said Oneschuk. "I know Steve DeCrescenzo received approval to refurbish the box within the last year, and we've talked several times about getting the project going. We are more than willing to work with him to make the Stoneham Square Police Box's return to the square a reality."
