Reading chief backs off of chief search Committee

STONEHAM, MA - Three new candidates recently applied for the vacant chief of police post after the Selectmen unanimously voted last June to reopen the application phase for the job.
According to Betty Luciano, Stoneham’s Human Resources Coordinator, a total of 21 people have now expressed an interest in replacing Police Chief Herb Moore, who stepped down after suffering a stoke last year.
In mid-June, nearly two weeks after an initial deadline had expired, the Board of Selectmen, without any explanation, voted unanimously to reopen the application phase until June 26.
Although that new window has since come and gone, Luciano explained that the process in now stalled due to a change in the search team’s membership.
Luciano, Town Administrator Rob Florino, Stoneham police veteran Lt. Jim McIntyre, and Reading Police Chief James Cormier had comprised the original interview panel.
However, since that time, Cormier has reportedly informed town officials that he will be unable to participate.
“Not yet,” responded Luciano, when asked if interviews had started. “We’re still putting together an interview panel. The chief from Reading didn’t work out. I’ll know by Friday whether one of our chiefs can serve on the panel. So we’re still setting it up.”
