STONEHAM, MA - The world of Stoneham sports suffered through some dark times over the summer, but there might be some very good news on the horizon if the community bands together and gets involved.

The Town of Stoneham is one of the eligible finalists for the Friday Night Lights Community Sweepstakes, a contest that would install - free of charge - a set of lights at Rec Park that could open up a host of opportunities at the recreation area.

In addition to Stoneham Pop Warner players getting to enjoy the experience of playing under the lights, it could open up Rec Park for night league softball as well as offer lights to the adjacent basketball court and street hockey court.

"I think anything that people can afford to give toward the Recreation Department is greatly appreciated, but this is something that could be pretty special," said Stoneham Rec Director Christine DelRossi. "There's been so much doom and gloom concerning sports and Recreation in Stoneham lately, that this could really be something everyone can rally around."

Sports Radio 850 WEEI-AM along with NorthEast-Eagle Electrical Distributors recently announced the Friday Night Lights Community Sweepstakes. This new contest will give cities and towns from all over New England the chance to win a brand new installed sports lighting system for their youth football league field - in this case Rec Park off Franklin Street.

The Friday Night Lights Community Sweepstakes was originally open to any football fields in all cities or towns in the following states that are used in whole or in part for youth football games: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine and Connecticut.

Entry into this contest will only be accepted from an authorized town or city representative, and the deadline to enter Stoneham was on Sunday September 30, 2007.

DelRossi presented some information about the contest to Town Administrator David Ragucci, and a short time later Stoneham had found their way into entering the contest.

For the months of October and November all eligible entries received will be posted on www.newfridaynightlights.com and the public will be invited to vote. For every 850 votes for a specific football field, that football field will receive one entry in the grand prize drawing.

The grand prizewinner will be announced on Friday December 7, 2007.

"There have been some technical difficulties with the site recently, but there should be one vote for each email account that visits the site and we hope everyone can get online and support Stoneham in this," said DelRossi, who was also seeking $15,000 at Town Meeting to aid her largely self-sufficient budget. "It's a great opportunity to upgrade one of our Rec sites without any cost involved. That's a win-win for everyone."

Entercom is one of the nation's largest radio broadcasters with operations, pro forma for pending acquisitions, in San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Sacramento, Cincinnati, Portland, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Austin, Norfolk, Buffalo, New Orleans, Providence, Memphis, Greensboro, Rochester, Greenville/Spartanburg, Madison, Wichita, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Springfield and Gainesville/Ocala.
