STONEHAM, MA - A pair of Stoneham High School teens were arrested last Wednesday afternoon after a fist fight reportedly broke out at the Annual Powder Puff game at Broadway Field.

Jennifer Demetri, age 18, of Medford, and Katelyn A. Welch, 18, of 42 Pond Street, Stoneham, were arrested at Broadway Field at 2:11 p.m. Demetri was arrested for assault and battery, illegal possession of a Class D substance and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Walsh was arrested for assault and battery, but witnesses on the scene claimed that Welch was merely defending herself from a physical attack by the Medford teen.

The police were originally called to the scene for a crowd of over 200 people and several reports of teenage drinking taking place in the Broadway Field parking lot. Officers oversaw the game, but brought the handcuffs when two girls, Demetri and Welch, were reportedly "throwing haymakers" at each other according to police sources.

Both the Stoneham Schools and the police don't have an official involvement with the annual pre-Thanksgiving game of football by SHS girls, but that could change starting next year given the way the event has degenerated over the last two year.

"The school has not been involved with the Powder Puff game for many years - how long exactly I do not know," said Stoneham Superintendent of Schools Dr. Les Olson. "I cannot say that there is a "movement" [to host the game] but we have discussed the need to see if there is an activity that we can sponsor that would be a safe and attractive alternative to the game in future years."
