STONEHAM, MA - Several Girl Scouts and Brownies from St. Patricks Parish enjoyed participating in a homecoming celebration at Hanscom Air Base on Friday, June 27 for servicemen and women who recently returned home from overseas.
The Scouts were invited to participate in Hanscom's Heroes Homecoming in appreciation for the thousands of boxes of Girl Scout cookies donated earlier this year to military personnel serving overseas.
"This will be a great opportunity for the girls to meet some of the Airmen that received cookies ....We're still in awe of what they accomplished in collecting the cookies," said Rhonda Siciliano of Hanscom AFB Public Affairs Office. "All of their hard work has brought smiles to the faces of our Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in places such as Balad, Iraq; Kabul, Afghanistan; Manas AB in Kyrgzystan; Soto Cano, Honduras and countless other places around the world."
With earlier than predicted thunderstorms threatening whether or not the celebration would go on, the invited guests, including families of the servicemen, civilian and military dignitaries, Steve Ralston from the New England Revolution, former Boston Bruins player Bob Sweeney, as well as scouts, were thrilled to make their way onto the field when skies eventually cleared.
Once the official ceremony ended, the scouts and the crowd were treated to amusement rides and games. Music, provided by Ernie and the Automatics enhanced the scene as families and friends of our service men and women rejoiced in being back together
