Pedestrian remains critical after Main Street collision

STONEHAM, MA - A 47-year-old Stoneham man with special needs is in critical condition – and facing a long road to any possible recovery -- after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross Main Street last Friday afternoon.
Raymond Tarquino, a longtime employee of the Shaws Supermarket in Stoneham, was attempting to cross Main Street at the corner of Richardson Lane near the Redstone Liqours when he was struck by a vehicle at 1:22 p.m. – and was immediately airlifted from Robin Hood School to Brigham and Women’s Hospital a short time later.
The vehicle involved in the accident was being operated by 21-year-old Stoneham resident Devin Fields, and it was unclear as of press time whether there would be any vehicular charges pursued against Fields as a result of the immediate tragedy.
According to Sgt. Jim McIntyre of the Stoneham Police Department, the Middlesex County DA’s Office and the Mass State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team are both investigating the matter, and all of the facts surrounding the accident – including a lengthy skid mark along Main Street that illustrated Fields’ vehicle screeching to a stop -- will help make the final determination if there was any negligence involved in the accident.
“We contacted the State Police reconstruction team,” said Stoneham Police Chief Richard Bongiorno. “They will be doing a lengthy investigation. We cannot determine at this point if there are any violations of the law. We will be interviewing the operator of the car.”
In addition to statements from Fields following the accident, local police officials unsuccessfully attempted to retrieve potential video of the incident and have interviewed a number of people that witnessed the tragic accident firsthand.
Tarquino is still listed in critical condition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and has reportedly suffered numerous serious head injuries to both his brain and skull as well as multiple fractures in his neck and ribs and other injuries – the kinds of serious impact-induced injuries that could affect the longtime Stoneham resident for the rest of his life.
